Shelly has been actively involved with the mental health profession for 10 years. She began working with high risk adolescents at Waco Center for Youth, where she gained professional knowledge and expertise in the management of troubled youth. Afterward, she continued her professional development at Klaras Center for Families. Here she advanced her experience in working with children, ages 3-18, with such needs as ADHD, suicidal ideation, mood disorders, behavioral difficulties, and parent/child attachment. During her time at these agencies, Shelly had considerable collaboration in the community with various government organizations, MHMR, schools, community resources, law enforcement, and Child/Adult Protective Services. Shelly has also been active in the improvement of the community by volunteering for groups such as Junior League, Talitha Koum, and LEAPS. Shelly was a director of AFGO Counseling Resources, providing services as a LPC in private practice for 5 years. She is now a full-time instructor of psychology at McLennan Community College. She continues to give presentations on mental health related issues at community agencies. Shelly also maintains a private practice as a LPC-Supervisor with emphasis on child/adolescent and family counseling. Her counseling orientation is founded on a belief of establishing a strong therapeutic relationship. This relationship is based on person-centered principles of empathy, honesty/genuineness, and unconditional positive regard. She also uses techniques to reach goals based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Playtherapy, and Evidence Based Practice. As president and owner of Abounding Aspirations Psychological Services, Shelly hopes that you will find through our services the inspiration and motivation you need to meet your personal goals and desires.
